Yoda's Advice to the Unknowing

Dear Yoda,
My people think they are going to medicate me with tablets. Do you have any tips on how to avoid medication?
Hypo Condri Cat

Dear Hypo,
Whatever you do, don't let them wrap you in a towel with only your head poking out. If they do this, you will be virtually powerless to retaliate. Also, beware of the good tasting tablets (chicken and tuna) our hospital is having made especially for cats. It makes disgusting medication almost tasteless. You have to keep your eye on people, they can be very tricky.

Dear Yoda,
My people have a small icky offspring that is constantly coming home with colds. The little thing sneezes and oozes all over me, am I at risk of getting his colds?
Newman Itis

Hello Newman,
The common cold is not a zoonosis, therefore it can not be passed from people to their pets. If you want to keep the mini masters from touching you I suggest rolling in something odiferous! (Caution! Not too smelly otherwise they may decide to bath you! VERY BAD!!)

WHO'S WHO AT THE ZOO!

One of our terrific veterinary assistants is Katrina Smith, She has been working at Eagle Ridge Veterinary Hospital since December 2002.

Katrina was born at Saint Mary's hospital and is currently a grade 12 student at Chatelech Secondary School. Katrina loves sports, including soccer which she played competitively for 12 years. After graduating next spring, Katrina plans to study abroad, possibly preparing for a career in forensic sciences.

Katrina enjoys working at Eagle Ridge because she gets to spend a lot of time tending to the hospitals patients. An avid fan of medical programs, Kat also enjoys assisting and watching our hospitals modern medical techniques and surgeries.

TRICKS AND TREATS

You do it - your neighbors do it - most everybody does it! About 86% of dog owners and 68% of cat owners regularly give their pets treats and about 50% of them give them daily!Treats are just small food rewards for doing a trick, being a "good boy", training or just because you care. That little snack however, can add up to big problems.
Several treats a day can greatly affect your pet's caloric intake. For example a 7 kg dog getting 2 treats a day may become 30% overweight in 1 year if it's regular dietary intake isn't reduced.
Just like with our own tasty snack foods - dog and cat treats generally have very high levels of carbohydrates which is why they taste so good! Most treats are also unbalanced nutritionally with high percentage of proteins (up to 67%).
Extra care with treats needs to be taken if your pet is affected by a disease such as diabetes, kidney or liver disease, heart failure, bladder stones, food allergies, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Adding treats to a therapeutic diet can greatly change the nutritional profile of the diet and may actually enhance/accelerate the problem, making it harder to control.
It is important to know that in both Canada and the U.S. there are no controls in place to monitor the nutritional quality of pet treats.Neither countries food control associations have jurisdiction over regulating the contents of a treat or snack, so you really need to be aware and careful of what you're feeding you pet.
The majority of treats are harmless (if fed in moderation) and can be part of a well balance diet.

Is your dog constantly in any form of water - lakes, streams, ditches etc??
Do you know that giardia or "beaver fever" as it is known is lerking in those waters?? There is a vaccination now available for dogs and soon for cats that can be administered at our office and is boostered annually.
(People can contract it too)

Tiger is a charismatic playful dog who thrives in the company of others and charms all with his upbeat and bouncy attitude. Though he came to us as the result of a horrific accident he has improved dramatically and has never allowed physical pain to dampen his spirits.
After being dragged behind a truck down a paved highway for nearly half a kilometer he came to us with the pads on his paws worn down to the meat, and in some places almost the bone. He was in extreme pain and bleeding profusely, but did not allow this to affect his demeanor. He remained calm and well mannered while we cleaned and bandaged his paws.
The plan was for him to stay the night in our hospital until his "owner" came to pick him up and bring him home to the mainland in the morning. The next morning came and went and days passed without any word from the man responsible for Tiger's injuries.
Tiger has been staying with us since then and has become not only a unique member of our hospital facility, but has also claimed a place in our hearts.
We have finally found a wonderful home to adopt Tiger. His new home has two other dogs to play with and new owners who adore him. He recently came in for a visit and looks very happy and healthy!

1- 800 - PET MEDS DEMYSTIFIED

Lately, we have been getting a number of questions about 1 - 800 - Pet Meds. You may have seen the commercials on T.V. - a hyper dog dragging his poor super model owner into the vets office to wait, wait, wait for an appointment for flea medication.

We decided to do a little research and we are not really surprised with what we found out.

If you take the exchange rate under consideration, we are on average over $10.00 less than this discount service. Also, if you are from Canada, there is a shipping fee of $18.10 even though the service claims to have free delivery.

**Finally, you do not have to bring your pet to the hospital for flea medication - all you need to know is the weight of your pet.**

THE OLD GRAY MARE...

We would all like to congratulate Darla Messner on her 10 year anniversary here at the hospital!
Darla joined us in August 1993 as our head receptionist and veterinary assistant. From that point on Darla has always been an active and willing team member. Her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor has helped make Eagle Ridge such an enjoyable place for our clients and their pets, not to mention a great place to work.
Motivated by her belief in the importance of the human-animal bond, Darla works hard to guide clients through the difficult times as well as sharing the excitement of a new puppy or kitten. As our ever-enthusiastic "tour-guide", Darla has shown many kindergarten and preschool groups through the hospital.Showing the kids everything from surgery and x-rays to "gross" parasites, she always makes it memorable and fun!
Even now despite being kept busy with her new family, Darla continues to come to work with a smile, ready for a day filled with puppy breath and frisky felines.
Thank you Darla for all your years of hard work and dedication!
